4 and 1/2 months until Clarkes Gambit 2023! Enter now, commit to a challenge (and put a tiny bit of pressure on yourself to train during winter). Link in bio to enter

Without a doubt, the biggest 'issue' for riders is only starting to train a few weeks out, overdoing it and getting injured. Second is just not being used to eating and drinking when riding - its an actual skill to fuel well.

The best training is organising gravel rides with your friends (or new friends in our FB group), and getting out and enjoying a long ride. The cardiovascular system for these types of rides is being able to ride for a long time, and during that ride, recover from the hills without bonking.

If you haven't done 6 hours on a bike, your shoulders and behind are going to feel it! You need to get a couple of 4+ hours rides on a bike if you are doing the longest distance.

The good news is, we all know you are time poor, so we have some ideas for how to train when you don't have 4+ hours.

Sessions we recommend:

#1 – 1 hour on the trainer doing intervals targeting your threshold, say 2 x 20mins at your threshold HR or Watts, 5 mins recovery between efforts. Try and maintain the same average heart rate for both intervals.

#2 – Hill repeats, find a 10 minute climb near home and try to do 5 repeats without getting slower each time, recover on the ride back down.

#3 – bunch ride for fun, 2 hours, just enjoy it, coffee ride.

#4 – a long ride on the weekend, at least 4 hours with a few efforts and hills thrown in, practice your eating and drinking on the bike.

Bendemeer Randonnee Tamworth - August 2023

This is a free social ride (not a organised event/race/marshalled) for anyone to join and test out some beautiful gravel trails around Tamworth. Mark Stewart and his team are designing the courses right now, but we'll be looking at up to 100km each day!

You can do more or less, but we imagine one or two groups, poking down a few roads, a few wrong turns, basically trying to map out a great course - ie, where we would have water stops, food etc.

Again, this will be completely self organised - you will need all your own food, water, supplies for the two days.

We're just trying to gauge some numbers, so we can ask the Bendemeer Hotel for an appropriate amount of space (or even the local caravan park).

If you are likely to come, just drop a comment below after you check out the event page so we can get accommodation in August (its fine to say 'likely, good chance etc - we just need a rough gauge): https://graveleur.cc/event/bendemeer-randonnee/

Everyone's fav rider @lachlanmorton got third in unbound! Feasibly the biggest gravel race in the world.

Who thinks we should figure out a way to do an Aussie version?

Two things - Nick Thompson rode the 2023 Thunderbolts on a single speed! What a slightly insane but impressive feat - 230ks, 5000m vert, one gear (32/20) - we were so impressed we sent him some @panaracer_world tyres.

Second thing - for the TA training camp - we've had lots of questions about distance and difficulty - the answer is, its going to be fun and catered. If you are at a stage where you can ride for a hour or two, that's fine - we'll cater for it. If you can smash all day, we'll cater for it. We're there to make you comfy on bumpy roads and able to fix that mechanical, and mostly - how to fuel yourself. You will be surprised how much better you perform properly fueled.

Thunderbolts Training Camp - SEP 1 AT 10 AM – SEP 3 AT 3 PM - Full details on site (link below)

We are going to be based at Kurrara High Country Resort in Tomalla, right in the middle of the Thunderbolts course.

High level schedule
Friday: ride first thing around 10am, back to base for a late lunch, free time, dinner, orientation and make sure we've got everyone's questions covered.
Saturday: early briefing and session on three topics ie. nutrition, navigation and safety then a longer ride, likely split into two groups, dinner and a movie/relax.
Sunday: similar program on final two topics, shorter ride. Depending on numbers we might do lunch then head home.

Some of the things we'll cover include:
BikePacking and gear: What gear to bring and how to use it
Safety: what to do before, during and after the event in case of emergency, how to patch yourself up with a compact first aid kit. How to communicate with your loved ones and emergency services should things go pear shaped.
Nutrition: How to fuel the body and keep your bike rolling, how and what to eat on the bike, how to repair your bike, in the field with a small spares kit
Navigation: how to navigate and re-route in the field if things get blocked or you need to turn around. How to get unlost. How to re-route on the go.
Training: How to train for a bike bike packing trip.
We'll be bringing insider pro knowledge built up over decades, taught by the experts in a super friendly and fun manner, fully hands on, we look at every aspect of your setup and system to make sure it is the most efficient for you as an individual.
We guide you in so you're safe and prepared for whatever comes your way, this gives you peace of mind for you and your loved ones, that you're prepared and trained in the 'art of not dying' in tough situations.
